Graduate Students
Jonathan Juarez
Jonathan is first-generation graduate who received his B.S. in Biology from CSU Bakersfield in 2022. He is currently pursuing his M.S. in Biology at CSU Bakersfield. His graduate research is focused on leaf decomposition of native and invasive species in aquatic ecosystems and their impacts on macroinvertebrate communities. His research has been funded in part by the Title Vb: Graduate Collaborative Research Program. After graduation, he plans to pursue a career at a government agency in monitoring aquatic and riparian ecosystems.

Alexandra Brown (she/her)
Lex joined the McNeish Lab in 2021 after her summer REU experience inspired her to pursue aquatic ecology. She graduated from CSUB in 2022 with her B.S. Biology and entered the M.S. Biology program there in 2023. Her thesis is “Seasonal microplastic pollution in aquatic biota and habitats: An investigation of anthropogenic impacts on aquatic systems linked with land use-land cover and species traits.” She is next seeking a Ph.D. position, to ultimately pursue a career research professorship. As a female minority with a disability, she hopes to increase inclusion of individuals who are underrepresented in aquatic sciences. Her hobbies outside the lab include environmental advocacy, reading, trying new restaurants, going to concerts, doing arts and crafts, and watching Dodger baseball.

Isaac Owens
Isaac recently graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Biology and is now pursuing a Master of Science degree in the same field. His current research focuses on applying the River Continuum Concept, originally developed for North American eastern deciduous forests, to river systems in California's arid climate across an elevation gradient. He is also exploring edge effects in California water basins. Isaac aspires to have a lasting impact by improving accessibility, persistence, and graduation rates among young men of color in college education. Concurrently, he is deeply committed to advancing his career in the field of ecology and biology, where he can continue to explore and contribute to our understanding of the natural world.

Grace is a student on the Clinical Lab Sciences track in CSUB. As a member in Dr. McNeish’s lab, she is an active member of the mircoplastic research team. Grace is a co-leader of a research project with another member of the lab that focuses on hydroperiod impacts on leaf degradation.

Amber is an undergraduate student working towards her B.S. in Biology. Amber is an artist, backpacker, and lover of the wilderness. Amber aspires to pursue a career in Field Botany. She is particularly interested in Riparian zones and landscapes affected by wildfires.

I'm a first-generation college student majoring in biology with a concentration in biotechnology. I have hopes of pursuing a career in the medical field either in oncology or the emergency department. I joined the lab with hopes to further my knowledge about microplastics and how they affect our environment and wildlife/aquatic environments. And to learn more about research as it could be a possible career path for myself.

Mason Christian
Mason is pursuing his B.S. in Biology at CSUB with the aspiration of becoming a professor after furthering his education. His motivation for joining the lab stemmed from wanting to learn more about the process of conducting research and the effects of anthropogenic activities on aquatic habitats. While assisting with data collection, research preparation, macroinvertebrate identification, and field sampling, he has enjoyed collaborating with other like-minded students and building connections. Combining his love for art and science has also been a passion of his, as he works on a science-based children’s book that focuses on tide pool ecosystems.

Destiny is a first-generation senior Biology major at CSUB with a focus on Clinical Laboratory Sciences. She is also co-leader of a research project that focuses on leaf and plastic degradation with various dry periods.

I am a first-generation college student majoring in Human Biology. During my time in the lab, I have helped with several ongoing projects that have allowed me to learn more about plastic pollution and macroinvertebrates. I joined the lab in hopes of expanding my knowledge and skills in the field of research, since this is something I would want to do in my future career. I am also conducting research in plant anatomy looking at leaf vessel diameter and length in several woody species.

She plans to earn her Master's degree and pursue a career in the medical field.

Her research is focused on understanding the pathways of anthropogenic litter and microplastic transport and associated fate across terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. Her research activities were funded by CSU COAST Graduate Student Research Award and CSUB Student Research Scholarship programs. After graduating with her M.S., Amy is interested in gaining practical work experience in water quality monitoring and water resource management at a private or government regulatory agency.

Natalie Nunez
