Kern River Monitoring
The Kern River is located in California with the headwaters beginning in the Sierra Mountains and the main stem of the river going through Bakersfield CA. The river channel was often dry throughout parts the year for many years; however, increased spring precipitation, coupled with a large snowpack in 2023, resulted in continuous water flows through the Lower Kern River (LKR). Flows in the LKR have been sustained through 2024 resulting in continuous flow for nearly two years. An interesting aspect of the Kern River is the series of water diversions that have contributed to shifts in the LKR ecosystem. As far as we know, seasonal and regular monitoring at finer temporal scales of the Lower Kern River for water quality and aquatic organisms has not been done before. Several community and regional organizations have expressed interest in scientific research linked with the Kern River; therefore, regular monitoring data and observations have been made available for the public. We are planning to expand our monitoring sites and welcome suggestions and requests at this time.
